Chapeltown Young Peoples Club

The CYPC has established various links to the world of creative arts, from Fine Art, digital media, DJ, MC/Rap/Poetry and Dance, including running workshops or identifying opportunities for young members to perform or present their work.

Some of the local artists we work with include DJ LP, Marcia Brown & Gino. Venues for creative activity include Space@Hilcrest, Mandela Centre, Palace and Prince Phillip Centre.

In 2002 young members of Yes-Cyber after school club joined Leeds Young Authors (LYA). Since then some have been to LA as part of the group activities,due to their efforts and standard commitment.

Via the club, BBC Radio Leeds (Robert Pitt) has supported local artists, giving them regular opportunities for exposure (Some of the artists have included LYA)

Associated artists also get the chance to perform at local events and festivals including Chapeltown Carnival, Little London Community Day and Hyde Park Unity Day.

• CINEMA/MEDIA PROJECT – The idea of a community cinema remains a strong one. Ongoing, hopefully this project will be off the ground by November 2004. Project 7 will also be involved.
• MEDIA - CYPC is committed to developing multi-media projects. Artist Marcia Brown will be working with some members using digital video and stills.

The club is currently in the process of building links with HOST Media Centre in terms of creating a young media team/committee from local communities who will seek to support opportunities to produce and exhibit work.

COMMUNITY RADIO (SPACE@Hilcrest)
Radio broadcasting at community level is a great opportunity for locals, especially those who have been involved with the process (in terms of pirate stations) for a while. These people of experience, local organisations and young people will be consulted by Space@Hilcrest which is currently in the process of working towards a legal community radio station.
